About the event

National Blood Donor Month is observed every January to honor the generosity of blood donors and raise awareness about the ongoing need for blood donations. For individuals living with sickle cell disease, blood transfusions are a critical, life-saving therapy. Yet, blood shortages, especially in communities of color, pose ongoing risks to patients who rely on regular transfusions.
Many patients require frequent blood transfusions as part of their care. The best outcomes happen when donors’ blood closely match recipients, something far more likely when the donor pool reflects the genetic diversity of the patients served. Increasing donations from Black and Brown donors reduces delays, improves compatibility, and supports safer transfusions for people living with sickle cell disease.
