THE BROTHERHOOD CONNECTION
Sickle Cell Men's Support Group- where men come together and talk about men's topics.
“I can come in here and just be a man—not a patient.”
The atmosphere should be relaxed, culturally responsive, confidential, nonjudgmental, and male-centered without feeling clinical. Men should be able to talk about sickle cell—or not talk about sickle cell. They should be able to laugh, vent, celebrate, ask questions, talk about relationships, work, fatherhood, pain, sex and intimacy, finances, medical care, discrimination, fear, purpose, faith, or simply what happened that week.
There is real value in that peer connection. CDC profiles of adults and families affected by SCD describe support groups and connections with other warriors as ways to obtain information, reduce isolation, find encouragement, and connect with people who understand the lived experience.
